Taste of Hyrule: An Introduction

alinkbetweenportraits:

Welcome to Tastes of Hyrule! This is something I plan on writing on the side along with my RP blog, partially for entertainment but mostly to observe the cuisine and flavors that impact Hylian culture along with other neighboring countries. Aside from being a huge Legend of Zelda fan for as long as I can remember, I’ve also spent years of my life studying the art, science, and history of cooking as part of my job. Therefore, I’m happy to put my knowledge to use and see if I can apply real world logic onto an otherwise fantasy setting for both writing reference and perhaps so that people can try these recipes out in the real world as accurately as possible. Because of the new cooking mechanics along with heavy emphasis on details, Breath of the Wild will naturally be one of my major sources. However, I do want to take advantage of the other games and their setting and see if they could possibly tie in together despite being in different timelines. I will do my best to provide as many photos and sources as possible when posting. Some things I want to talk about include…

1.) The ingredients and their proprieties

2.) Cooking methods in different cultures

3.) Tools of the trade and what the kitchen alone says about the food

4.) Rags vs Royalty in terms of cuisine

5.) The Wine Culture (or rather lack of) in the kingdom of Hyrule

6.) The blend of different cultures in food and what that means to Hyrule

7.) The impact each timeline has on Hyrule’s cuisine

8.) A brief observation on other parallel lands and their cuisine

Of course I will gladly take requests on a certain subject and give the best answer that I can. However, while keeping my answers as professional as possible, I do want to point out the elephant in the room and put a disclaimer.

The Legend of Zelda is a video game.

There are quite a few holes in the game when it comes to providing a rational link as to why the food and culture is the way it is. It’s a fantasy based setting and not everything has to be perfectly detailed. Hell, if Nintendo shrugged and told me they put in onigiri in a game heavily based on medieval fantasy because they were hungry, I would totally buy it more than anything I have to say. Critique and such is always welcome. I love to hear your personal opinions and thoughts on the subject even if you severely disagree with me. I do believe the fun in it all is sharing ideas and making the setting work despite it being unrealistic. However, I also ask that people keep an open mind while sharing and at least not let things get too out of hand. I’ll be doing the best that I can, but in the meantime, I really hope you’re all willing to see some of the ideas that I’ve come up with. See you in part 1!
