Visiting Beyond the Fourth Wall?

“Wha-!” She quickly held fast to the ribbon that was about to move out of her grasp. She was trying to be careful though. After all, who knew what would happen if she would somehow manage to enter her own hammerspace.

The Repairman stopped pulling and untied the ribbon. He handed the mallet back to Shinko and pulled out his dustpan, tying it to the ribbon.

“All right, Shinko. You can let go of that end. I’m going to do what you did, so hold the bottle upside-down and see if anything comes out.”

“Oh…um, okay,” she replied with a nod. She handed him the ribbon before accepting the bottle.

“Umm…just tell me when you’re ready?” Shinko asked the Repairman as she held the bottle upside-down.

The Repairman put the dustpan away and gripped the ribbon.

“Ready.”

Shinko blinked a bit, wondering if something had come out of the inside-out bottle. She made sure that her grip on the ribbon was still secure, still unsure as to what exactly the Repairman was testing out, or what it would prove.

“…what’s going on?”

“Well, a white ribbon came out of the bottle and it brought a hammer. Hold on to the ribbon, please!”

With that, the Repairman yanked on the ribbon-tied hammer.

“Oh…sure thing,” the small Toon nodded as she decided to leave the raisin bran dough alone for now.

“I done!” came Sinko’s voice as the smaller Toon came running into the kitchen.

“Oh! Um…Sinko, why don’t you wash your hands and then take the bowl into the other room so you can stir the dough?” asked Shinko.

“Tay!” was Sinko’s reply as she did just that, watching her nubby hands before whisking the bowl of dough away from the counter to stir it on the couch while she watched cartoons.

Shinko let out a small sigh of relief. Whatever was going on, she wanted to make sure that Sinko didn’t accidentally mess anything up. She took out her hammer, as well as a very long piece of ribbon, from her hammerspace. She tied one end of the ribbon around the handle of the hammer before replacing it back behind her.

“Umm….is this ribbon long enough?” she asked the Repairman, looking down at the white ribbon she was holding in her hands.

“That works,” he replied. “Now, let’s see…”

With the bottle still upside down, the Repairman gave a small shake.

Rattle. Rattle.

“Just as I thought,” he mused. He hit the bottom of the bottle a few times until…

Clunk.

He squinted into the bottle. There was nothing to see. Slowly, the Repairman inverted the container.

"Shinko, would you mind tying a ribbon around that hammer and then putting it away again?”

The Repairman stretched himself onto the chair appreciatively. He seemed to almost take on a humanoid form as he sat.

“Thank you. I just need to ask you a few questions to try and figure out what’s going on, won’t take long.”

He looked at the bottle again.

“First off, is your hammerspace currently working as normal?”

Shinko blinked a bit as she began to stir up the dough for the raisin bran cookies.

“…my hammerspace? Umm…”

She slowly reached behind herself to bring out a Toon hammer. She just as quickly put it back.

“…it seems fine. But…what’s wrong? I mean, I know you just sorta appeared in the kitchen via a bottle of goop, but…”

“But that’s just it,” the Repairman interjected. “Why was I removed again, and why to here this time?”

He looked at the bottle again. A thought occurred to him.

"Was this bottle in your house before I got here?”

“Umm…I’m not really sure. There’s a bunch of random ingredients in the cupboards that have probably been stuck in the back for a while now. I’m not sure about all the stuff we might have,” Shinko told him, looking a bit worried.

This was the Fourth Wall Repairman after all. If he was noticing something was wrong, did that mean that something was going wrong with the Fourth Wall? Was it broken more than usual?

Or even worse, was it slowly going beyond repair? What would happen if it couldn’t be fixed?

“Hmm…It has nothing to do with the wall,” the Repairman mused, “otherwise I would instinctually know about this…"

He squinted into the bottle. There was nothing to see. Slowly, the Repairman inverted the container.

“Heh…I see,” replied Shinko, smiling a bit. “I think the living room has carpeting. But umm…let’s see…”

She walked over to grab a chair from the dining room before placing it in the kitchen. “Here we go. You can sit here. That way you can ask me stuff while I go about getting the raisin cookie dough ready,” she explained.

The Repairman stretched himself onto the chair appreciatively. He seemed to almost take on a humanoid form as he sat.

Shinko blinked as she watched him look over the bottle he came out of.

“Oh! Um…sure thing. Also… can I get you anything? I mean, me and Sinko were about to make some cookies, and I dunno if you’d like to stay for a few….” she suggested, clasping her hands together in front as she rocked back and forth on her heels.

“I’d appreciate that," he replied, looking up and lifting his goggles. "I should probably sit down somewhere until I’m sure I’m fine, anyway.”

The Repairman then quivered a little bit, and seemed to tighten.

“In case you have carpeting,” he clarified. “The last thing anyone has to explain is ink stains all over.”

“Heh…I see,” replied Shinko, smiling a bit. “I think the living room has carpeting. But umm…let’s see…”

Sinko giggled a bit as she retracted her arm to skip over to Shinko. “He WAS da squishie~!”

“…that’s nice, Sinko. Why don’t you go clean up your toys, then we can go back to making raisin cookies,” said Shinko.

“Raisin bran cookies~!” With that, the little Toon skipped off to clean up whatever toys she had left out in the living room.

Shinko sighed a bit before smiling nervously at the blot. “Sorry about that, Mr. Repairman. She’s a lot more childish than me, and I don’t think I’m much older than her.”

”No worries. Sorry for my intrusion, I probably should be heading back.”

The Repairman picked up the bottle that he emerged from for inspection, donning a helmet with brass goggles on it in hopes of acquiring more information.

“…But, before I go, could I ask a few questions?”

“Apparently that’s something you need to fix about as much as the Fourth Wall, huh…” noted Shinko.

Sinko leaned over, reaching out to attempt to poke the Toon blob.

“Sinko, what are you doing now?” asked Shinko, putting her hands on her hips.

Sinko was a centimeter away from poking the Repairman before she stopped to look back at her ‘older sister’.

“He look da squishie. I wanna touch,” replied the green-eyed Toon.

“Yeah, I’m sure he’s squishy too, but that’s no reason for you to go around and poke people-”

Sinko leaned over to poke the Fourth Wall Repairman, despite Shinko’s objection.

The Repairman raised an “arm.”

“No, no, it’s fine, just make sure she doesn’t trip. Though, I’ve never had another Toon poke me, so I guess we’ll see what happens.”

The blot watched Sinko with interest as she reached towards him.

Squish.

“Um…this is Sinko. She’s my interdimensional counterpart. But at this point…I’m okay with saying she’s like my little sister…” explained Shinko as she turned to the small Toon that was looking up at her with green, fear-filled eyes. “No, Sinko, he’s not the Shadow Blot come to take you away to the Wasteland and steal your heart.”

“…you sure?” asked Sinko.

“I’m sure,” replied Shinko, patting the smaller Toon’s head.

Sinko replied by giving a big grin. “Okay! What his name?” she asked, tilting her head as she looked at the blot that seemed not much taller than her.

The Repairman thought for a moment.
“You know,” he mused, “I’ve never really had a name, just a profession. I’ll have to look into that soon. Anyway, I’m known as the Fourth Wall Repairman.”

He looked around again, and sighed.

“You know this is the third time this week that something like this happened?” he said. “I really should learn more about dimensional work.”

“Apparently that’s something you need to fix about as much as the Fourth Wall, huh…” noted Shinko.
