“Oh, no worries, I was just…”

And then Marie processed who she was talking to. That voice… She could have sworn it was the same wonderful one that was just singing…

“…Just…just looking for…”

Reason dribbled out of her mind as she began sweating a bit. What was she here for? Everything but the lovely singer was getting out of focus.“…L-looking for…someone…” she finished lamely, avoiding eye contact. “I g-guess I’ll try the bar, then…”

Susumu took a look around the box again, looking impressed. “Gosh…”
she gasped. “I never knew humans could fit this much stuff in those
little metal boxes!”

“Our kind.. Don’t live particularly close to humans,” Beep spoke up. “We don’t really get a lot of contact with-”

And that was when the strange blob started squeaking faster than the
girls could keep up with. Again. “Wha- Hey!” Susumu scolded. “I told you
I don’t know anything about these other people!” She hid behind her
arms a bit defensively. “Just… Calm down, okay? It’s gotta be a
coincidence, so don’t freak out, okay?”

Cat Slime stopped when he saw how much he was stressing Susumu out. He still wasn’t sure if this was a weird fluke or not, but he took a few deep breaths. Smiling weakly, he squeaked to excuse himself and dashed out the door.

It was muffled, but while Cat Slime’s squeaks couldn’t be heard, the Repairman’s voice could.

Cat Slime! Get back in–!” he began to shout, but was cut off.

“Huh?…No…What…Oh…How did you…”

He sighed.

“Look, if anything, they’re alternate versions, okay? So just, calm down, keep them safe for now, and feel free to keep the scarf. Okay? …Okay, I’m going back to work, and you aren’t going to scare me like that again!”

A few moments later, a guilty-looking Cat Slime came back through the door, wrapped in an enormous red and orange scarf.

He squeaked a few apologies, then asked if anything else was needed.

“Eww, and just what are YOU supposed to be?” The pink Bomberdog demanded, adjusting her eyepatch slightly as she glared at the two blobby creatures. She had never seen anything like them before on this planet. Were they even FROM this planet?

Well, if there were monsters in her base, she’d just have to take care of them herself. She produced a pink heart-shaped bomb from behind her back and held it above her head.

“…I suggest you leave before I blow you apart.”

“…We’re just passing Toons,” the Repairman muttered, offended by the dog’s apparent disgust. Blobs or not, he and Marie were fine!

Both looked in confusion at the “heart”. Was this some kind of weird greeting–

Oh.

“No need for that,” the Repairman huffed, pulling a tennis racket out from seemingly nowhere. He wasn’t gonna get blown into smithereens again today!

Marie, meanwhile, was ready to charge this dog. She planned to tackle her and defuse the bomb.

PUT IT DOWN!”

Ally had to be careful when wandering around the studio, there were a
lot of hazards she had to avoid. The ink, the ones who didn’t realize
she wasn’t Alice and tried to hurt her, and the studio was falling apart
rather badly. If you weren’t careful where you stepped you might fall
through the floor or get surprised by a broken pipe. This part of the
studio was always silent so hearing voices was a startling surprise for
her, and Ally did her best to follow the voice.

It wasn’t long before she caught up to the strange intruder. They defiantly weren’t a toon from this studio.

“Hello?”

“OH!”  the Repairman exclaimed. “Yes, hi, we’re just…doing…things…around here…”

“Oh, give up,” Marie sighed irritably, turning to the other Toon. “Sorry, you can probably guess we’re not from around here. Is it all right if we quickly fix the Wall here…?”

You didn’t have to mention–”

“She probably already knows. Most Toons seem to…”

“…Fair enough…”

“Well, anyway, sorry you have to meet us like this.”

Marie gestured to the blended form she shared with her brother.

“…Bit of a story. Anyway, who are you? Surprised we haven’t met a whole lot of others here…”

Follow-Up Question

It had been a week since the blending incident, and the Repairman and Marie were still feeling the effects. The Repairman was finally letting Marie help him out, partially because he had to, but also because she was right. She wouldn’t have tried to save him if she wanted to take his job.

“Hey, um, Repairman?” Marie asked. This felt awkward, given they were still fused together, but she had to know.

“…Yeah?”

“…What did make you think I was going to replace you? I mean, the letter clearly said…”

“You were gonna assist me, I know.”

The Repairman sighed.

“…You gotta keep in mind, I’ve been doing this alone for over eighty years now…”

“Yeah?”

“When you showed up, I thought I might be doing….doing something wrong. I mean, why else would they make an assistant out of the blue?”

He remembered that not only was Marie a blob of blue paint, but they were also both blue now.

“I mean, out of nowhere? I figured you were made as a way of saying ‘You idiot, we’ll show you how it’s done…’“

“…My creators didn’t animate me to say that, you know. They told me that you’ve been working alone for so many years, so I was gonna make your job a little easier. They said you deserved that.”

“…”

“…Repairman?”

“…”

And then the amalgamation hugged itself.

Urk! Okay, remember our strength… and you don’t have to cry! Just…it’s okay…”

I’M SORRY!”

Marie patted their shared shoulder, and after a moment, the two got back to work.

⊱🎀⊰ ❝e-excuse me—❞ was this really the time to be acting so polite? especially considering that this person was, well— i think you’re s-sitting on my tail mister!❞

“Hmm?”

The Repairman had just sat down on the bench (…so to speak; he was a blob of ink, after all). He didn’t even see who else was there, but…

Oh!” he exclaimed, hopping off the bench, and quickly looking at her tail. He hoped he didn’t hurt her…

“Sorry ‘bout that… didn’t see you there…” he laughed awkwardly. “Just been up and busy all day…”

“So YOU’RE the guy I’m keeping in business!”

He looks to the readers, “Appreciate him, folks!  His job’s pretty rough!”

“Thanks for understand–hey!”

He sighed and shook his head. He had encountered this before.

Taking a deep breath, he tried to keep himself in check.

“All right, look, this isn’t the only place I gotta be today, so if you could at least wait a bit, that’d be nice…”

He produced his cart, with two toolboxes on the bottom shelf and a snoozing Marie on the top. After a brief check to make sure her headphones and sleeping mask were on, he pulled the red toolbox and began to sift through it.
